What
exactly is Hypnosis? Is it anything like Ive seen on the TV?
Well that depends what exactly
you have been watching. If you have seen stage hypnotist shows then the answer
is no, it is nothing like that at all. If you have for example, seen Supersize
versus Superskinny where the presenter Anna
Richardson was hypnotised to help her lose weight and not crave unhealthy
food, then Yes. (By the way, Hypnosis was the most effective method for weight
loss that the presenter tried on the program). Quite simply Hypnotherapy is a
pleasant relaxation process. You will be deeply relaxed and completely conscious.
You will be fully aware of everything I say to you whilst in Hypnosis.
Would you be controlling
me, could you make me do things I didnt want to do?
No.
This is a complete myth. During Hypnotherapy you are completely in control. You
are awake and therefore completely free to reject any suggestion that you felt
was unsuitable. If you do not reject it, (and there is no reason why you should
since as a therapist I am only offering suggestions that are beneficial), then
that suggestion will take root in your subconscious mind and start having beneficial
effects straight away.
If
you are wondering how come the stage hypnotist manages to get people to do all
that daft stuff, those participants are not chosen, they volunteer. Out of these
volunteers, the less suggestible people are sent back to the audience. You now
have on the stage the most suggestible and flamboyant members of the audience
as volunteers. Because they are volunteers and highly suggestible, they happily
accept the suggestions given to them by the hypnotist, this is not Hypnotherapy
or Hypnoanalysis.
I
dont think I am very suggestible, does that mean I cant be hypnotised?
Anybody can be hypnotised
unless, they are drunk, drugged or have certain mental handicaps. However, most
people are not the highly suggestible outgoing type that the stage hypnotist uses
in their shows to such dramatic effect. They are however, sufficiently hypnotisable
for therapy to take effect and that is all that is necessary for me to make a
real and positive difference to someones life.
How
does it work then?
Hypnosis
and Hypnotherapy work on the principal that once your body and conscious mind
are relaxed, the unconscious part of the mind can more freely accept the beneficial
suggestions that I as a hypnotherapist will give you. These beneficial suggestions
might be to feel more confident or to feel pride about becoming a non smoker.
The suggestions themselves will depend on what exactly you need help with. The
important thing to remember is that all suggestions are phrased in a positive
way to ensure that they really take effect and help you feel exactly how you want
to feel at the end of the session. Whether you want to feel confident, not crave
cigarettes, or feel satisfied before you end up over eating.
How many sessions does
it take?
It
depends upon what help you need. Hypnotherapy in the form of positive suggestion
therapy can be done in usually less than three sessions. However, this type of
therapy is not suitable for getting to the root cause of serious problems such
as phobias, severe eating disorders or OCD, (obsessive compulsive disorder). These
deep seated problems and many others require Pure Hypno-analysis which would be
conducted over six to twelve weekly sessions depending on the client.
What is Pure hypnoanalysis?
Pure hypnoanalysis is a process
where over a period of several weeks the client, with my therapeutic help and
guidance will strive to uncover the root cause of their symptom, whether it be
a phobia, a compulsion or obsessional thought or action. Whatever the symptom,
it will have a cause, something will have caused the client to bottle up emotions.
We may not be aware of the cause of these bottled up emotions as they can be forgotten
over time by our concious mind. Fortunately, they haven't been forgotten altogether
though and these original bottled up emotions will manifest themselves as phobias,
obsessions, overeating also called "comfort eating"and such like.
Phobias for example are often not related to the thing the person is phobic about, at
least not directly. Take for example the phobia of flying. It isnt too difficult
to see that this is a manifestation of a fear of not being in control of events
that are taking place directly to you.
In hypnoanalysis I will be able
to help the person suffering from this particular phobia to delve into their past
and find the root cause, (that original out of control feeling and the emotions
it generated, that have caused the phobia of flying). The client can then, relive
and release that emotion in the safe and controlled environment of my consulting
room, hence freeing them from their phobia. It really is that simple. The anxiety
was caused by something within the person, but outside of their control. Now they
know what the real cause was, it is now within their control and therefore cannot
cause these unpleasant symptoms again. This is true for many of the symptoms listed
on this website not just phobias.
When
will I start to feel better?
If
you have attended my practice for a couple of sessions of suggestion therapy,
maybe to lose weight or perhaps attended a single "one hit" Smoking
cessation session, you will have felt immediate positive results as soon as you
finished your first Hypnotherapy session. If however, you are attending for a
series of Pure Hypnoanalysis sessions for a deep rooted problem, the Hypno-analysis
itself works differently. You may not feel as though much is happening until we
have reached session four or so. Some symptoms dissipate as soon as the root cause
has been established and some will not dissipate until a few days after the final
session.
How
much does it cost?
My
professional fees are:
One
Hit Smoking Cessation £250. This session lasts one hour and twenty minutes.
Hypnotherapy £75 per
fifty minute session. (Expect between one and three weekly sessions)
Hypnoanalysis £75 per
fifty minute session. (Expect between five and twelve weekly sessions)
How can
you stop someone Smoking in only one session?
Smoking
is a surprisingly easy habit to give up with the help of Hypnosis. Most people
think that they are addicted to nicotine. This is not true, and it is why even with
nicotine replacement therapies a smoker will still have cravings for a cigarette
and in over seventy percent of cases, they will not be able to quit using this
method. They can of course get Zyban from their doctors, but most people I know
do not want to resort to what is basically an antidepressant drug to give up Smoking.
The effects of nicotine only last a couple of days, no longer. The effects of
the social aspect of Smoking, the habit and missing looking forward to a ciggy
at tea break at work or with a pint are the bits that make giving up so hard.
This is where most people come unstuck. So with our unique Smoking cessation program
I will change that persons relationship with cigarettes and therefore break
their need for them. I will make it easy to refuse cigarettes and make sure they
view them selves as a non smoker. Not an ex smoker. After all, an ex smoker has
to worry when he goes to the pub that they may be tempted to smoke, a non smoker
has no such thoughts since they have never smoked.
I
will make sure they have the willpower they need for that first couple of days.
I will also ensure that their desire to smoke is not then converted into the desire
to eat, a trap into which many ex smokers fall. They will not feel the need to
eat more because, they will not have a feeling of loss, that so often happens when
someone gives up Smoking. What usually happens is they feel they have lost a pleasurable
habit so they substitute another habit in its place, often without realising.
That is the reason ex smokers can put on weight! Nicotine is not addictive, but
the habit of Smoking is!
My
problem is a little embarrassing, how do I know you wont tell anybody?
At Nulife Hypnotherapy we
operate to higher standards of patient confidentiality than your GP! Whatever
you discuss with me stays between me and you. I have a receptionist only to take
calls when I am giving Hypnotherapy, but she will take only your name and a suitable
contact number for me to call you back. When I do call back, if you do not personally
pick up the phone yourself, I will not divulge my company or the nature of my
call. I will introduce myself simply as Cathy if they ask me my name. If I ring
you and it is not convenient for you to talk at that point, we can arrange a mutually
convenient time to speak in confidence.
